Testimony: A Child of the Father
"What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee." Psalm 56:3 KJV For most people a baptism is a joyful time, filled with excitement, wonder, and God's love. But, I almost missed my chance to fully join in. Many of my friends had waded out and stood in waist deep water, waiting their turn. I delighted in their baptisms. But, I still stood frozen at the thought of water closing over my head. I begged God to help me overcome my fear. Then, as if on cue, one friend waved, and encouraged me to come on. I took a deep breath, and stepped into the lake. My heart thrilled to see the Father's smile reflected in my friends' eyes. I took another step toward the minister, who waited for me. I felt the wind ruffle my hair. With each step I took, I felt water slosh inside my shoes and could see the lake bottom clouding with disturbed sand. I stopped to gather courage one more time. Then I looked firmly at the minister and marched toward him. I grasped for his arm, panting, and the minister steadied me. He said, "It's OK, I've got you." With a quick breath, I affirmed my faith in Jesus as my Saviour. Then he said, I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit as he gently pushed my shoulders down. I could see sun diamonds glimmer above me, blurred faces watched through the water over my head, and I felt my auburn hair fan out. When I rose from the water, I felt strengthened in my Father's love. Father, help me grow stronger in my faith, so that no matter what happens, I will choose to trust in you. I'm so glad to be your child. Amen Copyright 2005 by Beverly Waller |
